All jobs have plusses and minuses. Being a postman has plusses and minuses of course.
On the down side, you have to wake up very early to get going on your route. Plus, you have to go out in the cold.
The plus side though has some real benefits. One major one is that you can get this job without a lot of education. You don’t have to spend a fortune on tuition and sit in classrooms for years to be qualified to be a postal worker.
You don’t need a driver’s license necessarily. It will make getting the job easier, so it is helpful, but it isn’t required. You can always deliver mail on foot or bike, if it comes to it, and you can even be a mail sorter where you don’t have to deliver mail at all.
Most postal workers start off earning minimum wage. After some time, and more responsibility and experience, you can expect raises though.
Pretty soon, you’ll be in a supervisory or management position and you’ll be making a living wage. You will have a lot of responsibility. A manager in the post office can expect to schedule others’ work, to supervise work, to delegate tasks and so on.
Don’t expect perks though, not even free postage. You can expect to get a bunch of uniforms to wear, which is helpful. You’ll get uniforms for all sorts of weather since you’ll be delivering mail in cold or rain or heat.
If you are going to be a postal worker, you can expect to work most days. You only will have one guaranteed day off per week – Sunday. You will also have off on bank holidays. Remember though, during heavy mail times like the Chrismtas holiday season, you’ll end up working extra shifts to make sure that the mail all gets through on time.
All in all, working at the post office is a great job. You perform a needed service, and this means you have an honorable profession.
The Internet has not changed this. Some people think that email will mean that postal mail will disappear. That makes no sense. Yes, people are sending more email – but at the same time, people are doing online shopping and those packages need to get delivered. Postal jobs will be around for a long time.
